Future directions in research relating to food security

May 2009

Global Food Security Logo

In May BBSRC led a consultation on behalf of the Research Councils on future research for food security.

The world faces a growing food security crisis due to a combination of factors including:

  • Growing population
  • Climate change threatening global harvests
  • Exotic and endemic animal disease
  • Global economic downturn disrupting the flow of trade

Research is essential in meeting the challenges ahead.

Workshop

Leading scientists, policy makers, funders, farmers, food manufacturers and retailers met at a workshop in February 2009. They identified challenges to delivering sustainable food security and the science we need to meet them.

From this we developed a consultation document seeking views on future research needs, and how to overcome barriers to delivery.

Road map

Responses to the consultation will be used to construct a 'road map' of future research needs across all relevant disciplines.

Key issues expected to feature in the road map include:

  • Priorities for research
  • Translation of research into practical application
  • Maintaining the capacity for research (skills and facilities)
  • Ensuring effective coordination across research funders
