Targeted priority studentships

The call for proposals is closed

Next proposal deadline: TBC

These studentships are awarded annually on an evaluation of the quality of research training offered by a department or research unit in specific research priority areas identified for each year.

Departments apply for funding and provide information regarding their research training.

Background

This annual competition awards studentship funding in areas where we are making substantial research investment through initiatives and other funding priorities.

BBSRC’s vision of moving towards a more predictive biology needs to be underpinned by recognition in the scientific community that bioscience has to become increasingly interdisciplinary. Many exciting advances in our understanding of biological systems will emerge at the interfaces between biology, chemistry, physics and engineering. The mathematical modelling needed for a systems biology approach poses unique challenges.

As a result, we are keen to encourage proposals from any department with research groups whose current or future research strategy reflects our vision and supports the research area being targeted.

Priority area

  • TBC

Number of awards

Funding for 10 4-year studentships is available. They will be awarded in the form of flexible Doctoral Training Grants (DTGs).

Rather than funding individual studentships, DTGs provide funding in the form of a single training grant. This gives the department considerable flexibility in how it chooses to use the funding, subject to the terms and conditions of the grant. For example:

  • Flexible start dates for students
  • Ability to part-fund studentships with other sponsors
  • Joint funding of studentships with another Research Council
  • Offering 3-year studentships where appropriate, with flexibility to use of funding across different headings
